Online Test for German as a Foreign Language

Developed by the TestDaF Institute, onSET Deutsch is an online placement test for German as a foreign language; it consists of a specially designed online cloze (gap-fill) test and tests language skills at levels A2–C1About proficiency levels:

The onSET Deutsch test is not a language examination that meets the requirements for entry to German universities; the certificate will not be in any way recognised as the equivalent of a DSH, Test DaF or similar German language certificate. The exam rather acts as a broad benchmark of a learner’s language skills and the corresponding level. The onSET Deutsch certificate can, however, be used by students from abroad as a confirmation of their knowledge of German in the context of DAAD scholarship applications for a period of study in Germany. As a licensed test centre, Sprachenakademie offers the exam regularly. The examination fee amounts to €35, including the registration fee. Please note: The exam will be conducted in a room at Sprachenakademie Aachen. It is unfortunately not possible to participate in the exam from a private computer at home.

Exam format and grading

The exam consists of 8 tasks and takes up to 40 minutes to complete. Each task comprises a gap-fill exercise with exactly 20 gaps. Candidates are allowed 5 minutes to complete each gap-fill exercise. One point is available for every correctly filled gap in a given exercise. The final onSET Deutsch score will be between 0 (lowest score) and 160 (highest score) points.
